INDYCAR, Watkins Glen International announce multi-year extension

Watkins Glen International is officially New York’s home for INDYCAR racing once again.

In a joint announcement made at the New York State Fair in Syracuse, Governor Andrew Cuomo, Watkins Glen International President Michael Printup, New York State Senator Tom O’Mara, INDYCAR President Jay Frye, and INDYCAR driver Will Power confirmed that the Verizon IndyCar Series will return to the historic circuit in 2017 and beyond.
“In the end, this was the goal of both Watkins Glen International and INDYCAR – to announce a multi-year agreement. We are very much looking forward to next weekend’s Grand Prix at The Glen, and can’t wait to get started with our efforts to grow this event moving into the 2017 season,” said Printup. “Of course, this would not be possible without the outstanding support that we receive from New York State and Governor Cuomo. It’s just a great day and a very exciting announcement for our fans and partners.”
State Senator Tom O’Mara praised Watkins Glen International as a first-class attraction in the Finger Lakes Region, and a boon to New York State in general.
“The excitement just keeps building for the return of IndyCar racing to The Glen on Labor Day Weekend and so today’s news that we can look forward to this racing for at least two more years is just outstanding. Our thanks to Governor Cuomo and his team for their continued support of racing in Watkins Glen.”

Following the cancellation of the planned Grand Prix of Boston, Printup and Frye announced in Indianapolis that the series would return to Watkins Glen International September 1-4, Labor Day weekend, on a one-year deal that would fill the open date on the schedule.(WGI)

Logano dominates Zippo 200 to notch third straight win at Watkins Glen International

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. -- Joey Logano is off to a fast start at Watkins Glen International – again.
With a win in Saturday’s NASCAR XFINITY Series Zippo 200 at The Glen, the 26-year-old Connecticut native is halfway to a second straight sweep of races of the historic circuit, thanks to a dominant performance and a tire issue that ended teammate Brad Keselowski’s late-race bid.
“It was a lot of fun racing with Brad today,” Logano said in Gatorade Victory Lane. “What an awesome win for Penske today. This has been a long time coming for the XFINITY team and I’m just so happy for them.”

For Team Penske, it was, surprisingly, first XFINITY Series win of the 2016 season. Logano led 67 laps en route to his 26th series win. Defending NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Kyle Busch challenged for the lead in the early stages of the 82-lap race, but was forced to retire after recurring splitter issues and damage from his involvement in a nine-car incident that brought the race to a halt for a brief red flag. The crash also collected Todd Bodine, Ryan Sieg, Bubba Wallace, Blake Koch, JJ Yeley, Tomy Drissi, Nicolas Hammann, and Scott Heckert.

Paul Menard, who passed Keselowski with seven laps to go, finished second. He was followed by Kyle Larson, Daniel Suarez, and Trevor Bayne.
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Cheez-It™ 355 rounds out the weekend of racing from Watkins Glen International on Sunday, with the green flag scheduled for 2:30 p.m. EST. Tickets for Sunday’s action at The Glen are available at the track's ticket office, located at Gate 4A just off of County Route 16. The race will be broadcast LIVE on USA Network beginning at 2:00 p.m. EST.(WGI)

Cindric stays perfect with win in Bully Hill Vineyards 100 at Watkins Glen International

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. -- Youth was the name of the game on Friday at Watkins Glen International.
The top four finishers of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East Bully Hill Vineyards 100 were under 20, including eventual winner Austin Cindric, who dominated the 40-lap race that kicked off a tripleheader weekend of NASCAR action at the historic circuit in New York.
Cindric, a high school senior, kept his record in the series perfect, as he leaves Watkins Glen with two starts that have ended in trips to Gatorade Victory Lane. Kaz Grala was the first driver to put pressure on Cindric, who started from the pole, and then relinquished second place to Cole Custer with 10 laps remaining. With just five to go, point leader Justin Haley overtook Custer and pushed Cindric for the final two laps but just didn’t have enough to catch Cindric.
The 17-year-old Cindric is the son of Team Penske president Tim Cindric, and has established an impressive racing resume this season, competing in several stock car and sports car racing series around
the country. He set the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East qualifying record at the newly repaved Watkins Glen earlier Friday with a lap of 1:12.408.
"It's just a lot of fun to do these weekends," Cindric said. "It's great because it's a way to make my name in stock car racing since I'm very new. Hopefully, it will transfer over when I start to do some oval stuff."
The race weekend continues on Saturday, August 6 with qualifying for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Cheez-It 355 at 12:15 p.m. and the green flag drops  on the NASCAR XFINITY Series Zippo 200 at The Glen at 2:00 p.m. Tickets for Saturday and Sunday's action at The Glen are still available online at www.theglen.com, or at the track's ticket office, located at Gate 4A just off of County Route 16.(WGI)

Stewart-Haas Racing to Field NASCAR XFINITY Series Team Beginning in 2017

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR), the championship-winning NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team, will expand into the NASCAR XFINITY Series in 2017.

The organization will field a full-time, single-car team in the XFINITY Series with a driver and sponsor lineup to be announced prior to the conclusion of the 2016 season. The XFINITY Series team will be run from SHR’s headquarters in Kannapolis, North Carolina.

“In order to maintain the competitiveness that has earned SHR two championships since our debut in 2009, we needed an outlet to develop drivers and team personnel for the Sprint Cup Series,” said Greg Zipadelli, vice president of competition, SHR. “People make the difference between winning and losing. An XFINITY Series team gives us added depth that will allow us to promote from within whenever necessary.”

SHR won its first Sprint Cup championship in 2011 with Tony Stewart and earned its second title in 2014 with Kevin Harvick. Since its inception in 2009, SHR has won 33 point-paying races, two non-point races and 28 poles.

“An XFINITY Series team has always been something we would consider when the time was right, and that time is now,” said Stewart, who co-owns SHR with Gene Haas, founder of Haas Automation. “Staying successful in this sport means staying ahead of the curve, and having an XFINITY Series team provides an in-house driver development program and a new channel for personnel to make a positive impact with our race team.”

“This is a natural progression of SHR’s growth and one that allows us to be more self-sufficient,” Haas said. “If you look at all the teams that are successful in Sprint Cup, they have a direct connection to the XFINITY Series where drivers, engineers, mechanics and pit crew members are developed. We’re an established team with a strong infrastructure that is ready for this endeavor.”(SHR)

Watkins Glen International partners donate Cheez-It™ 355, Zippo 200 tickets to soldiers, families

Watkins Glen International announced Friday the generous donation, made by several of the track’s partners, of more than 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Cheez-It™ 355 and NASCAR XFINITY Series Zippo 200 tickets to soldiers and their families.

Kaplan University, Nextera Energy, Genesee Construction, VP Small Engine Fuels, and Weaver Media all purchased tickets to the August 4-7, 2016 race weekend at The Glen, before sharing with U.S. Army, New York Army National Guard, U.S. Marine Corps, and U.S. Air Force representatives. Now, an event known for its armed forces tributes will be complete with military families taking in all of the pageantry and excitement that comes with NASCAR’s lone trip to New York State.

“We couldn’t be more grateful to these five organizations for what they have done for these soldiers and their families,” said Watkins Glen International President Michael Printup. “We look forward to a great contingent of soldier families in the stands and walking the grounds during the upcoming race weekend. In addition, we will have over 100 soldiers from around the area sworn into the military with the oath of Enlistment ceremony, committing to defend the Constitution of the United States of America.”(WGI)

Fans rejoice in IndyCar return to Watkins Glen

IndyCar fans were generally disappointed that the series did not return to Watkins Glen International following the 2010 season. The track was given the July 4th weekend for its yearly race. This date never really drew the numbers of fans to support the continuation of the race. Ever since the track announced its repave project, rumors have been circling regarding a return to the historic road course. When the race promotors for the Boston Grand Prix pulled out, IndyCar saw its perfect opportunity to return to the Glen. In less than three weeks the track, ISC and IndyCar worked out a deal to return for the 2016 season during the Labor Day weekend. Following the announcement, the feedback on social media was massively positive. Tickets for the weekend, which will also include the Indy Light series will go on sale May 18th. Blake Shelton filming at Texas

Texas Motor Speedway is having a casting call during next week's Duck Commander 500 NASCAR doubleheader that will give fans of Blake Shelton the opportunity to take part in a national television commercial featuring the country music superstar. NBC and NBC Sports have selected Texas Motor Speedway as the backdrop for the broadcast partner's opening theme video for its 2016 NASCAR coverage of the season's final half, which includes November's AAA Texas 500, and will film the segment on Friday, April 8, in the south paddock area of the speedway infield. The casting call is for fans to serve as the stage-side crowd as Shelton, also a judge on NBC's popular reality show "The Voice," performs his hit song, "Bringing Back the Sunshine." To register, it's as simple as downloading Texas Motor Speedway's free mobile app. The app is available on iTunes and Google Play. Those selected as participants will get access to the Texas Motor Speedway infield for them and a guest and be part of the crowd for Shelton's performance.(Texas Motor Speedway)

Grosjean wants to run NASCAR road course race

Romain Grosjean says that contesting a one-off road course event in NASCAR is still on his radar - but that he would want to do a proper test first. The Frenchman sat in a NASCAR machine at Gene Haas's factory last year after signing for the American's F1 team and said at the time that he would not be against trying one out on a track. And although he has ruled out doing an oval race, he says competing in a road course event is something that he is still up for. When asked whether he still had an interest in contesting a NASCAR race, Grosjean told Motorsport.com: "Yes! But I'd do it on a road course. Not on an oval, never. I'd be scared, and it's too much of a specialty. I'm open to doing some testing [of a Sprint Cup car] on a road course to see how it runs before making my decision. This car is vastly different from an F1 car."(Motorsport)

Sonoma Raceway to Add New Panasonic LED Scoring Pylon and Displays

SONOMA, Calif. (March 24, 2016) - Sonoma Raceway will offer fans an entirely new perspective on the racing action, as the wine country facility upgrades its spectator experience with more than 5,000 square feet of Panasonic LED digital signage.
Most notably, the raceway will replace its outdated lap/leader board, which has stood above Turn 1 of the road course since 1994, with an 85-foot tall, four-sided LED scoring tower. The new pylon will provide real-time running order for up to 20 positions, dynamic race-related graphics and fan information.
The new scoring tower will be located in approximately the same position above Turn 1, but is more than 26-feet taller than the old board and will be easily visible from almost every seating area around the road course. The new fan amenity will make its debut at the Toyota/Save Mart 350 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event, June 24-26.
In addition, the raceway will add an 84- x 12-foot Panasonic LED video board on the front of its three-story Drag Tower building. This video board will be easily viewed from the Main Grandstand, as well as the temporary grandstand during the Toyota NHRA Sonoma Nationals Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event in July.
"These two new displays are going to be spectacular and will correct what has been a major deficiency in the guest experience at Sonoma Raceway," said raceway President and General Manager, Steve Page. "We can't wait to fire them up."
This new technology will allow the raceway to create and deliver videos, graphic overlays, real-time statistics, custom content and sponsor advertisements. The new displays will be utilized during all three Sonoma Raceway major event weekends, including the Toyota/Save Mart 350, Toyota NHRA Sonoma Nationals and GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma Verizon IndyCar Series Championship.
"We are delighted to be partnering once again with Sonoma Raceway and providing technologies that will help contribute to their fans' satisfaction with each visit to the track," said Don Szczepaniak, Panasonic executive vice president responsible for AV Solutions. "The new LED scoring pylon and extended length video board are designed to raise the excitement level and give fans a more immersive and memorable experience than ever before."
Construction on the new video boards and displays is expected to begin at the end of March with the demolition of the old lap/leader board. Completion of the project is slated for early June.(Sonoma Raceway)

Audi to NASCAR?

In an interview last week, NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France touched on the potential of new manufacturers entering the sport, joining the current stable of Chevrolet, Ford and Toyota. "There is some interest, and by a couple of different manufacturers and we would be open to that in the right conditions," France said. "I think a lot of the car companies are understandably looking at the terrific job that Toyota has done by partnering with NASCAR and the success and all the things that comes along with that. They've been an incredible success story for a car manufacturer looking to come into a sport that's very difficult to come in, compete and win every weekend. But there's an interest. And this is obviously the biggest opportunity in auto racing in North America."

NASCAR.com video journalist Matthew Dillner added to the speculation when he tweeted that Audi could be making their way to NASCAR in the future.

Watkins Glen International visits State Capitol to promote tourism, ’16 season

ALBANY, N.Y. (March 23, 2016) - Members of the Watkins Glen International team and IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship drivers Jordan and Ricky Taylor traveled to the State capitol this week to meet with legislators and open a New York State motorsports exhibit in the Empire State Plaza.

During a legislative session on Tuesday afternoon, the Taylor brothers and WGI staff were recognized as distinguished guests, while the historic road course was lauded for being home to the state’s largest sporting event, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Cheez-It 355™ in August, which attracts fans from all 50 states and 16 different countries. Watkins Glen International events annually generate over $200 million in economic activity and more than 2,000 jobs across the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions.

As part of the exhibit housed in the Empire State Plaza’s indoor concourse, Kyle Busch’s 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series-winning Toyota Camry was on display in addition to John Morton’s national championship-winning Datsun 240z, a Mazda MX-5 Miata, and a dirt modified car from Utica-Rome Speedway.“We always enjoy our time in Albany, catching up with legislators and spreading the word of Watkins Glen International and tourism in the Finger Lakes,” said WGI President Michael Printup. “This year’s exhibit housed in Empire State Plaza provides us with the opportunity to showcase not only what we have to offer, but a glimpse into motorsports around the state, as well.”

In a joint statement, State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C,I-Big Flats), Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R,C,I-Corning), and Assemblyman Chris Friend (R,C,I-Big Flats) said,
“It’s a great privilege for us to join Governor Cuomo and our legislative colleagues, Watkins Glen International, and the professional drivers who make this sport go to showcase the importance of American motorsports to the regional and statewide economies. It’s also a great opportunity to demonstrate our pride in one of the world’s iconic sporting venues and the fact that ‘The Glen’ has resonated so powerfully throughout the history of American motorsports for more than six decades. Watkins Glen International is one of New York State’s premier destinations, a backbone of our leading tourism industry, and a driving force for countess charitable, community service, and economic development initiatives. We’re lucky to call Watkins Glen International one of our own.”(WGI)

New season, track surface closing in on 2016 debut at Watkins Glen International

WATKINS GLEN, NY (March 18, 2016) - With an offseason full of track repaving and preparation in the rearview mirror, race season at Watkins Glen International is fast approaching.

To mark the beginning of another season at the storied road course, Opening Weekend fueled by Kwik Fill Red Apple once again provides fans with the opportunity to take their personal vehicles on track behind an official WGI pace car and take advantage of on-site ticket sales for upcoming events.

Proceeds from this year’s event admissions will benefit the R.A.C.E. (Racing and Community Enrichment) Foundation, a donor-advised fund of the NASCAR Foundation. In addition, on Saturday morning, The Arc of Schuyler, a non-profit organization providing support to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, is holding a 3.4-mile run, or one-mile walk on the track. To register, visit www.arcofschuyler.org.

“Opening Weekend is always special because it signifies a new year for the facility and our fans,” said Watkins Glen International President Michael Printup. “The anticipation is even greater this season due to the official debut of our repaved track. It’s been fun to talk about it over the winter months, but it’s about time we have some cars out there.”

Festivities kick off with opening ceremonies to be held on Friday, April 15th, further details to be announced as they are confirmed. The 12th annual Toyota Green Grand Prix, a showcase of motoring technology that aims for a cleaner environment, returns to the track, as well.

On both Saturday and Sunday, fans will have the unique opportunity to drive the track in their own vehicle. Tickets to 2016 events at Watkins Glen International will also be on sale at advance prices for one final time before the seasonal increase on Tuesday, April 19th.

Michael Waltrip Joins BK Racing

Two-time Daytona 500 winner Michael Waltrip will compete in the 2016 Daytona 500 for BK Racing. Waltrip, a commentator for Fox Sports, had sponsorship for the race from Maxwell House, but he had not announced which team he would drive for until Thursday, nine days prior to opening practice at Daytona International Speedway.

BK Racing is expected to have two automatic berths in the Daytona 500 as part of the new NASCAR "charter" system that is expected to be finalized in the coming days. The team will field three cars at Daytona, with Waltrip driving the No. 83 that typically will be driven by Matt DiBenedetto. DiBenedetto will drive a third car, the No. 93, while David Ragan will drive the No. 23 he is expected to run all season.(ESPN)

New for 2016 NASCAR Hotpass

New for the 2016 NASCAR season I will be uploading multi-feed videos of part or all of select Sprint Cup races. One feed will be onboard camera's for a select driver and the other feed will be the network broadcast of the race with either TV or radio audio. Essentially it is a watered down version of NASCAR Hotpass which was broadcasted by DirecTV from 2007-2013. I have included a sample video from the 2015 Cheez It 355 at The Glen.
