Changes coming to Phoenix?

After five-consecutive fall sell-outs at Phoenix International Raceway, the track is considering several capital improvement's for the half-century old track - including the possibility of moving the start-finish line to the backstretch. "I think we're going to take a really hard look at our master plan over the next couple of months and start to answer some of those questions about how best to maximize the opportunities here at Phoenix," PIR track president Bryan Sperber said. "If this were a baseball game, we're probably in the first inning of that. So, there will probably be a lot of different things that will surface and will vet a lot of the potential opportunities and land on a really good plan for Phoenix going forward." What's made the backstretch so attractive to fans is how the reconstruction of the one-mile track has enhanced the quality of racing. In 2010, ISC announced a $100 million project that widened the front stretch to 62 feet and expanded the dogleg by 95 feet which increased the radius to 500 feet. Progressive banking was added to the relatively flat track. Turns 1 and 2 were raised to 10-11 degrees, Turns 3 and 4 to 8-9 degrees. Work was completed in tim for the November 2011 race. "The fans love it - what they call the dive-bombing," Sperber says of the action on the backstretch where drivers use the apron to their advantage. "Whoever thought we could be four and five-wide at Phoenix. It's been tremendously exciting. We thought it would be good, but it vastly exceeded even my expectations. We've really been blessed with a great racetrack and I think the next step for us is to make sure the rest of the facility matches the high quality of what we're seeing in terms of the racing."

With the track holding approximately 60,000 fans along the front stretch into Turns 1 and 2, a row of motorcoaches on the backstretch and a smattering of spectators on Rattlesnake Hill between Turns 3 and 4, there's certainly room for expansion. While many tracks are tearing down stands, few areas boast the car culture of Phoenix and the valley. "We've looked at enhancing the front stretch," Sperber said. "We've looked at some concepts, like adding a double-decker stand on the frontstretch. Certainly, the idea of developing some things on the back - were even talked about back in the late '90s - Bill France Jr., even talked about that.(Motorsport)(11-16-2015)

Penalty Announcement: Kenseth suspended 2 races; Patrick fined

Matt Kenseth , the driver of the #20 Dollar General Toyota, has been penalized for an infraction that occurred during the Nov. 1st race at Martinsville Speedway. This is a Behavioral Penalty (Sections 12.1, 12.8). Kenseth has been suspended from NASCAR through the completion of the next two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship events and placed on NASCAR probation for a six-month period following issuance of the penalty notice.

"Based upon our extensive review, we have concluded that the #20 car driver, who is no longer in the Chase, intentionally wrecked the #22 car driver, a Chase-eligible competitor who was leading the race at the time,"said Steve O'Donnell, NASCAR executive vice president and chief racing development officer. "The #20 car was nine laps down, and eliminated the #22 car's opportunity to continue to compete in the race.

"Additionally, we factored aspects of safety into our decision, and also the fact that the new Chase elimination format puts a premium on each and every race. These actions have no place in NASCAR."

Danica Patrick, the driver of the #10 car, has been penalized for an infraction that also took place during the Nov. 1 race at Martinsville Speedway. This is a Behavioral Penalty (Sections 12.1, 12.8). Patrick has been fined $50,000, assessed with the loss of 25 series championship driver points and placed on NASCAR probation through Dec. 31.(NASCAR)

NASCAR Statement Regarding Talladega Finish

"NASCAR has worked to review an extensive amount of material from Sunday's NASCAR race in Talladega including video, team radio transmissions and downloadable data. Based on that review, the race results are considered official as we prepare for the upcoming 2015 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Eliminator Round starting Sunday at Martinsville Speedway. Post-race inspection is currently being conducted. The five cars at the NASCAR Research & Development Center for post-race inspection are the #22 (winner), #88 (runner-up), #18 (final car qualifying for the Eliminator Round), #31(first car not qualifying for the Eliminator Round) and the #98 (random). Additionally, aside from today's post-race inspection, NASCAR has completed review of any other potential penalties from the track this past weekend [Stewart-Haas cars], and there will be no further actions."(NASCAR)

JGR drivers react to Talladega finish

Recap: Wild finish claims several Contenders

Dale Jr's Thoughts on Final Restart

Walk us through the final restart and your take on it:

Earnhardt, Jr. "I couldn't believe he (Joey Logano) gave me the bottom. I was like 'man this is a gift.' I was going to win the race for sure, but that caution came out. I'm fine with the new rule. Everybody is going to debate that we were thinking before the race that they made a good change on the green-white-checkered to go to one and I still feel that way. Per the rules we run second. I can live with that. The #22 (Joey Logano) did a great job. He had a hell of a round winning all three races. If he wins the championship he can look back on this round here as the one that set him up."
"I'm proud of what we did today. We did everything we needed to do, just fell about the width of the splitter. You know how I hate that splitter, so, another reason (laughs)."

Should NASCAR have let you run longer under that green-white-checkered before throwing the caution?

Earnhardt, Jr. "Another 100 yards I would have been in the lead, but NASCAR makes the calls. They are the governing body and I have 100 percent faith in the choices that they make. I'm not going to be too upset about it. I did everything I could. I'm proud of myself. I'm proud of my team. My guys did a good job on pit road. We had a little issue, but if this group sticks together we are going to do great things next year. I believe in all of them. I'm proud of what we did. We can sit here and pout about this day, but we didn't do good enough in the first two races of this round. If we had done better in those first two races of this round we would not be worried about losing by a splitter. We didn't do a good job in those first two races. We've got to try to win another race before the year is out, have some fun. Martinsville is coming up. I'm excited about that. We've got a great team. This is my first year with Greg and we are just going to get better. He is just going to get better. We've got a lot to look forward to. It's disappointing, but I'm proud of the car. We really worked hard and we did a hell of a job today." (Chevy Racing)

Truex Jr. to rear of field after rule confusion

Martin Truex Jr.'s time during the first round of single-car qualifying at Talladega Superspeedway on Saturday was disallowed after he dipped below the double-yellow line during his lap. His lap of 191.762 mph would have been good for 21st in the starting lineup but instead he will start from the back of the field in 43rd for Sunday's CampingWorld.com 500 at Talladega. "The double-yellow line deal, I just didn't know anything about it. So, Cole (Pearn, crew chief) said, 'Sorry, guess I should have told you the change.' Just one of those memos that I didn't get, so a little confused there." NASCAR ruled in July prior to the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway that drivers' qualifying times at superspeedways would be disallowed if they passed below the double-yellow line. However, Daytona's qualifying rainout meant the rule premiered this weekend at Talladega, the next restrictor-plate race on the Sprint Cup schedule. Because of the disqualification, the #78 team will have the last choice for pit stall selection. Nonetheless, the mistake isn't detrimental to the #78 team, who had strategized they would ride in the back from the start. "We kinda planned to ride in the back for the first part anyways, so it makes it a lot easier to get back there," Pearn said in the garage. (NASCAR)

Allgaier to back of field after pit road incident

The front of Justin Allgaier's car was damaged in a bizarre incident Saturday during qualifying with the driver who will take his ride next season. Clint Bowyer, who will replace Allgaier at HScott Motorsports next year, backed into Allgaier's car on pit road before going on to the track to make his qualifying attempt at Talladega Superspeedway. "I can honestly say I've never experienced anything like that," Allgaier said. Said Bowyer: "I felt terrible. You've got to leave pretty aggressively. As soon as I let the clutch out, it was going the wrong direction. That's the craziest thing I've seen or have had happen in my life. It was in reverse." Allgaier will start at the rear of the field after his crew makes repairs. Allgaier, though, wasn't as worried about where he'll start. Allgaier said some duct work was damaged. "We're having to fit back up the actual aluminum structure that connects the radiator to the front grille, and, obviously, that's a pretty crucial point. I'm not sure it will be 100 percent, but I think it we can probably get it 95 percent back to where it was before. It definitely isn"t ideal by any means". (NBC Sports)

Coming to Bristol Motor Speedway in Spring 2016: Colossus

The Last Great Colosseum will soon be the home of the world's largest outdoor, permanent, center-hung digital display, officials announced Wednesday. The display, named Colossus, will plunge fans into the color, roar and rumble of events through four high-resolution screens and a thunderous sound system, making the Bristol experience more immersive than ever before.

"Combine all the energy and excitement of Bristol with the ultimate home theater system, and you've got Colossus," said Jerry Caldwell, executive vice president and general manager of Bristol Motor Speedway (BMS). "The size, resolution, and sound of this display will draw our guests into every bit of action on the track and in the infield."

Each of Colossus' four custom-built screens is approximately 30 feet tall by 63 feet wide. In total, the system hosts nearly 54 million LEDs and 18 million pixels. At 6mm pitch, the pixels are grouped tighter than the large-scale outdoor displays in Times Square. The result: a glimmering visual experience capable of offering 281 trillion different color combinations, and one that’s 23 times brighter and 25 percent sharper than the typical home HD TV.

The display will hang from a halo-shaped truss and features an additional circular LED display beneath the screens which measures nearly six feet in height. Between the screens and the LED ring, that’s more than 8,500 square feet of high-resolution, active viewing area.

Colossus also boasts a state-of-the-art, 540,000-watt audio system powering 380 3-way loudspeakers and 48 stadium subwoofers, enough to make any rock star squirm with envy. By contrast, the current system hosts 2,400 watts of power, with only 10 2-way loudspeakers and 8 subwoofers.

The scale and quality of the project draws on the technology solutions expertise of partners such as Panasonic, a company known for creating large displays in numerous iconic sports venues across the U.S., including other Speedway Motorsports, Inc., (SMI) tracks like Charlotte and Texas Motor Speedways.(BMS)

Stewart moves wrongful death lawsuit to federal court

The wrongful death lawsuit filed against Tony Stewart by the parents of Kevin Ward Jr. was assigned to U.S. District Judge David Hurd on Monday after the Sprint Cup driver asked Friday for the case to be adjudicated in federal court rather than New York state court. There was no immediate response from Ward's legal team on whether it will challenge the federal court's jurisdiction and request to have it moved back into state court. The Ward family seeks unspecified damages related to their son's suffering, death and their own loss of economic support and services from their son. Stewart is scheduled to file his response to the lawsuit by Friday and an initial scheduling conference is set for Oct. 8.(ESPN)

NSCS Race Recap: Logano holds off Harvick to defend Bristol night race title

With Kevin Harvick hounding him mercilessly for 63 laps, Joey Logano kept his No. 22 Team Penske Ford out front after taking the lead on a Lap 438 restart and held on to win Saturday’s Irwin Tools Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Successfully defending last year’s victory at Thunder Valley, Logano won his third race of the season, his second at the .533-mile short track and the 11th of his career.

Harvick recovered from two pit road speeding penalties to finish second, a mere .220 seconds behind Logano. Polesitter Denny Hamlin ran third, and Clint Bowyer got a much-needed fourth place result in his No. 15 Michael Waltrip Racing Toyota.

It was a fascinating Chase over the final 63 laps, as Harvick would bury his No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet into the corner at the top of the track, catch Logano in the turns and watch as Logano dived to the bottom on corner exit and pull away.

"There’s not much time to look in the rearview mirror, but I realized how different his line was than mine," Logano said. "He’d drive in so hard and almost get to my back bumper, and then I’d drive off really good.

"It’s kind of interesting to watch a race like that, when two cars are a similar speed, but in two completely different ways. That’s what’s so fun about Bristol is you can drive the car about five or six different ways and make it fast, so it’s fun to race here."

Harvick said Logano’s ability to diamond the corner gave the Ford an advantage when it came to working traffic.

"He was just one step ahead of me in traffic," Harvick said. "I couldn't get my car to rotate across the center like I needed it to, and every time I tried to force it, it would snap the back out. He was able to go in really high and before the center of the corner drive down the corner and I was just having to wait just a split second to be able to put the throttle back down, and I couldn't do that, that huge diamond all the way to the bottom like he could, and that was really beneficial for him through traffic…

"He was able to get those huge runs up off the exit of the corner and just stayed one step ahead of me through traffic, I felt like, and in clean air we probably were a little faster, but it didn't really matter. I had to be in front of him to show that."(Ried Spencer, NASCAR WireService)

Stewart loans plane to Wilson family

Tony Stewart loaned his plane and pilots to Stefan Wilson, brother of injured IndyCar Series driver Justin Wilson, so Wilson could get from Indianapolis to his brother's side at a Pennsylvania hospital Sunday night. Justin Wilson was hit in the helmet by the flying nosepiece of Sage Karam's car during the race Sunday at Pocono Raceway and was airlifted to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest in Allentown, PA. Wilson suffered a severe head injury and is in a coma in critical condition, according to the IndyCar Series. It is not unusual for Stewart to lend his plane to people in the racing industry amid a health crisis. Most of those acts go unpublicized at Stewart's request. He did not publicize his loaning of the plane and pilots Sunday night, but several in the IndyCar community sent out tweets thanking him.(ESPN)

MWR & BOWYER AGREE TO SEPARATE AT SEASON’S END ORGANIZATION WILL NOT FIELD FULL-TIME CARS IN 2016

CORNELIUS, N.C. - Michael Waltrip Racing and Clint Bowyer have mutually agreed to separate at the conclusion of the 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup season. Bowyer, currently 16th in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Chase standings, will be free to pursue other career options in 2016 and beyond. MWR will continue to field the No. 15 and No. 55 Toyotas for the remainder of the 2015 season. Kauffman said MWR will not field a full-time NASCAR Sprint Cup entry in 2016.

ROB KAUFFMAN: “MWR will race hard and compete for the remainder of the 2015 season. This decision was made after weighing several different options and scenarios. “I felt it was important to make an announcement as soon as we had clarity, so that is what we are doing today. I want to thank all of our staff, partners, sponsors and fans for all their effort and support over the years. “Clint Bowyer has done a lot for MWR since joining us in 2012 and we appreciate the energy and effort he has given the organization. After many discussions, Clint and I agreed we would go our separate ways at the end of the season and I wish him well in whatever direction he pursues.”

CLINT BOWYER: “I want to thank Michael, Rob and everyone at Michael Waltrip Racing that made these past four years special. After extensive discussions with Rob and MWR, we came to the point that we mutually agreed our paths in the future just didn’t align but I think we all agreed on the next steps in a very professional manner. I am looking forward to what future opportunities may come but for now we have a championship to pursue in 2015 and we owe it to every one of our sponsors, partners, employees and fans to deliver on and off the track.”

MICHAEL WALTRIP: “Rob joined MWR in 2007 and has helped give us the resources to build a competitive race team, and in 2012, Clint Bowyer took us to the doorstep of a championship. From where MWR started behind my house in Sherrill’s Ford to winning Sprint Cup races, poles and earning Chase berths, I am proud of what we accomplished. “My family has been a part of NASCAR for almost five decades and I plan on being a part of it for years to come. I would not have had the opportunity to start this journey without so many great partners, sponsors and employees and I want to thank each of them for making Michael Waltrip Racing a reality.”(MWR)

Stewart makes donation to Iowa family

A NASCAR superstar is helping out a grieving Iowa family after learning about a tragic accident that claimed the lives of three Iowa brothers last week. Jamie, Carson, and Christian Singletary were killed in an accident near New Sharon in Mahaska County last Thursday, when their vehicle collided with a truck. Several fundraising efforts have been set up to help the boys' family, like a GoFundMe page, a U.S. Bank account, and a community spaghetti supper. Now, they're also getting help from NASCAR legend Tony Stewart. Ralphi Munson's chance encounter with Stewart in the parking lot of the old Pamida in Knoxville Tuesday night led to a compassionate donation from the driver. Munson, a friend of the Singletary family, was planning to sell off four totes of racing memorabilia she has collected since 1982 and give the proceeds to the family. She says she was meeting a friend she plans to help during the Knoxville Nationals this week, showing some of the race programs in the totes and talking about what the money will be used for when Tony Stewart approached her and gave her $700 for the memorabilia. Munson says Stewart told her, "I overheard everything and I want to do this for the kids." Munson joked with him that the price didn't include the totes and she'd need those back. That's when Stewart called over to a friend and told him to bring more money. The total donation ended up being $1,400.(WHO-TV)

NASCAR May Run The Boot in Future Races

NASCAR Executive Vice President and Chief Racing Development officer Steve O'Donnell stated on Sunday and reiterated on Tuesday on Sirius XM NASCAR Radio that NASCAR has been in talks with Watkins Glen International in regards to running the boot section of track. The boot is a section on track used by the Tudor Sportscar Series and various other series that run at WGI. It would extend the length of the track by almost 1 mile. With the repave project the bumpy boot section of track can now be reconsidered for NASCAR's use. O'Donnell also stated that it is not something that would occur in 2016, but that if NASCAR, WGI & NBC determine it will provide a better experience that they are open to running the full course in the future.

NASCAR prepared to run in the rain at Watkins Glen

For the second time this season, NASCAR will bring a new rain package to a road course for the Sprint Cup tour. Last September, the sanctioning body introduced new rules for racing in inclement weather. While it seldom rains at Sonoma, the chance to use windshield wipers, de-foggers, a rear flashing light and rain tires with the cars will be more likely this weekend at Watkins Glen. Last Wednesday, NASCAR sent out a bulletin to the teams updating Rule 10.13 Inclement Weather Race Procedures (Road Course Events). According to the note, should it rain, it will be up to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Managing Director to determine whether the track surface is "dry, wet or damp". At that point in the race, teams will be able to use "mandated or approved use of "wet" or "dry" condition equipment during competition."

Should the race start in "wet" weather conditions (10.13.2) the cars will (.a) start on the grid in "dry equipment configuration. After the series director declares "a 'wet' weather start (when the track surface is entirely covered with moisture)," the drivers will take a pace lap behind the caution car, (c) "return to their assigned pit stall and "install rain tires, front windshield wiper(s), and activate the rear flashing light for the Race.

According to the NASCAR Rulebook section 10.13.3, for race starts under "damp" conditions (when only portions of the track are wet), once the course has been deemed "damp" by the series director and after the pace lap, the cars (.c) "will return to their assigned pit stall and may elect, at the team's discretion, to install the rain tires and/or front windshield wiper(s). The rear flashing light must be activated for the Race under "damp" conditions.(Motorsport)

Kyle Busch skipping Watkins Glen XFINITY race

Kyle Busch won't compete in that event this week as he continues to recover from injuries he suffered at the start of the season. Boris Said will drive Busch's car in the Xfinity race. Busch broke his right leg and left foot in a crash in the season-opening Xfinity race at Daytona International Speedway in February. The only road course he has run this year was at Sonoma Raceway, winning the Sprint Cup race there. Busch was scheduled to compete in the Xfinity race at Watkins Glen this weekend but car owner Joe Gibbs said the decision was made to change his schedule. "He feels like Watkins Glen is more of a challenge than Sonoma," Gibbs said. "I feel like there's times when I get out of the car just putting weight back in my feet sometimes it hurts after race days and stuff like that," he said. "With Watkins Glen coming up (this) week, that's going to be another hard one to get through. That's going to be a tough challenge for myself and the left foot, but we'll make it and I'm sure we'll be okay just like Sonoma. It will be sore on Monday afterwards and we'll continue to ice it and make it feel better."(NBC Sports)

NSCS Race Recap: Matt Kenseth Wins At Pocono As Kyle Busch Runs Out Of Fuel

LONG POND, Pa. – Matt Kenseth, the unexpected winner of Sunday’s Windows 10 400 at Pocono Raceway, had to do a double take.

So did second and third-place finishers Brad Keselowski and Jeff Gordon.

Kenseth got a gift on the final lap of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race when Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Kyle Busch ran out of fuel halfway through the final lap at the 2.5-mile triangular track.

Seeking his fourth straight victory in the series, Busch didn’t save quite enough fuel on the last green-flag run to complete the 160-lap event, but he still gained 10 points toward his goal of reaching the top 30 in the series standings.

Busch, who finished 21st after getting a push toward the finish line from Reed Sorenson, is now 13 points behind 30th-place David Gilliland. Busch has five races to crack the top 30 to become eligible for the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.

Because Busch was pushed by another car, he did not get credit for completing the final lap, but that did not affect his finishing position.

Collectively, the top three finishers led seven laps. Joey Logano, who handed the lead to Busch when the No. 22 Team Penske Ford ran out of fuel with fewer than three laps left, led 97.

But Kenseth wasn’t about to look a gift horse in the mouth, especially after the driver of the No. 20 JGR Toyota did what others failed to do—save enough gas to get to the finish. Kenseth’s second victory of the season locked him into the Chase.

"There’s nothing like wins," said Kenseth, who collected his first victory at Pocono and the 33rd of his career. "We had a lot of wins in 2013 and were pretty spoiled and last year we had a big dry spell, and this year we were able to win Bristol.

"We’ve been up front a lot, so just really, really thankful to be with these guys and to get the win. I never thought I’d ever win at Pocono, and I never ever thought I’d win a fuel mileage race, so we did both today."

Despite coming tantalizingly close to a fourth straight win, Busch was philosophical about the near miss.

"Man, that’s a bummer," said Busch, who ran out of fuel on the Long Pond straightaway approaching the Tunnel Turn, less than a mile-and-a-half from the finish line. "I wish I would’ve saved a little more there that last run.

"I wish I would’ve known that the 22 (Logano) was that far away from making it. He was way far away from making it. Man, that was just a shame that we weren’t able to get it done there."

Busch took a moment to reflect on what might have been. The empty fuel tank also cost him entry into the top 30.

"We would be celebrating a win and a Chase berth," he said ruefully. "We got greedy. I don’t know how greedy, but that’s the position we’re in.(Ried Spencer, NASCAR Media)

Top things to look for at Watkins Glen

This upcoming weekend at Watkins Glen looks to provide a great race and here are some things to look for August 6-9th when NASCAR returns to the Glen. First, look forward to great weather! Each day that weekend will be in the high 70s or low 80s with no more than a 10% chance of rain. Friday the NASCAR K&N East Series looks to provide a great show. Last years winner Scott Heckert already has a win this year and is 3rd in standings. But the real story is William Byron, who has won 4 of his 8 starts in his rookie year. Saturday the NASCAR Xfinity Series cars will take to the track for the Zippo 200. Last year Marcos Ambrose won in a tight battle with Kyle Busch. With Marcos no longer in NASCAR will Kyle take the victory, or will a Xfinity Series regular win at the Glen. Keep an eye out for 2014 Series Champion Chase Elliott, who has been closing in on championship leader Chris Buscher the past few weeks. Then on Sunday will be the main event, the Cheez-It 355 at the Glen. This will be a great opportunity for last years winner AJ Allmendinger to win and return to the Chase for the Sprint Cup. It will also be a great opportunity for many of the drivers who have not yet won this season. Tony Stewart will be returning to a track where he has had success in the past, will he be able to turn around this season? Also keep an eye on Jeff Gordon, who will be making his final start at the Glen, a track that has been very good to him throughout his career, despite some tough finishes in recent years. This years race will be the final race on the current surface, as the track will be repaved following the race, will the old pavement have any effect on the race? It sure will be an exciting weekend and Around The Track will be there all weekend to provide coverage as the action occurs at Watkins Glen.

Kyle Bush talked to Stewart about injury

"Tony (Stewart) was actually the first one to the hospital -- as soon as the Daytona 500 was over he was there. He actually told everybody that was on his plane that they were going to wait. He was there for about four hours. We had a good talk, we had a good discussion about just what it was like and the process that he had to go through and how long it was probably going to be or what it was going to be. In all reality, our injuries were the same but entirely different. His was much more severe than mine. Just being able to talk with him, my mindset was okay. At first I was like, 'I'm never going to race again and I don't know what I'm going to do,' all those things go through your mind. You just continue to power through and listen to your doctors and those that are around you and of course my wife and the support system that I had. I wouldn't call it painless, there was certainly a lot of pain, but it went really, really well as far as you could say any injury healing goes. I was pretty pleased with everything."(Kyle Busch, Toyota Racing)

NASCAR responds to criticism of Indy rule package

NASCAR officials will not rush to judge the performance of the high-drag aero package used in Sunday's Brickyard 400 although drivers complained about its impact on the race. NASCAR Vice Chairman Mike Helton said Monday on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio's "The Morning Drive'' that officials will "take time" in assessing the package. "We're digesting the signs from it," he told SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. "The fans and the industry saw the race unfold as we did. There were certainly some components, the balance of competition, the opportunities that this package presented for the drivers to perform were of benefit, but we've heard the expressions of some of the drivers that didn't like some of characteristics of the project. We can absorb all the of the science and the data we collect, including talking to the industry, the drivers, the crew members and the competition departments of the teams and the car owners to take all of that now and absorb it. That's part of the reason we created this specific package for Indianapolis - to see the characteristics of it, knowing that there are a lot of personalities in the garage area that have different opinions ... but it's on NASCAR to come up with the one that we put in front of the fans on each individual racetrack each weekend. So, we'll take time." The package is scheduled to be used again next month at Michigan International Speedway.(NBC Sports)

Danica Patrick close to new deal with Stewart-Haas

On Tuesday, SHR spokesman Mike Arning said in an email to FOXSports.com that the organization is moving toward re-signing Patrick and securing a new primary sponsor for her car in the 2016 season. "Re-signing Danica Patrick remains a priority for Stewart-Haas Racing, and we're confident an agreement will be formalized soon," Arning wrote. "Discussions regarding sponsorship for Danica and the No. 10 team are progressing nicely. Our timetable to have her contract and sponsorship in place by the end of the summer is certainly attainable."(FoxSports)

Drivers say rules package at Indy not effective

NASCAR might need to go back to the drawing board in its quest to create more competitive stock car racing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. NASCAR officials debuted a "high-drag" aero package in Sunday's Brickyard 400, featuring a nine-inch spoiler and other measures intended to slow the cars down and punch a big hole in the air, which officials hoped would create drafting and pack racing. But the racing didn't look much different from previous NASCAR races at Indy. With the exception of some wild restarts, the racing was largely single file.

#4-Kevin Harvick called it a "huge science project that probably didn't really change that much." "I think everybody put in a lot of effort to try to really make everything a lot better, spent a lot of money, but I don't know that we accomplished everything that we were looking to accomplish," Harvick said.

#2-Brad Keselowski was disappointed the changes weren't more effective. "I think we were all expecting there to be more drafting than there was," Keselowski said. "I don't think the draft was much different than last year and the penalty for being behind someone in the corner was more significant."

All said, Harvick wondered whether the changes were worth the time and money they cost NASCAR teams. "I know my team did a lot of extra work to come to this race after we had already come here and tested and already spent that money to come here and test for a few days," Harvick said. "And then to come back and have to race something different was a huge undertaking for the teams for a huge science project that probably didn't change that much."
NASCAR is expected to use a similar package when teams run at Michigan International Speedway on Aug. 16.(USA Today)

Rule package specifics for Indy

At Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend, NASCAR will debut its second track-specific rule package of the season. The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series package planned for Indianapolis includes a 43-inch radiator pan (increased from 38 inches), a two-inch splitter leading edge, a one-inch wicker bill and nine-inch spoiler (increased from six inches). The increased downforce adds drag to the car and creates a larger draft window in the back.

For Indianapolis, teams will be allowed to change their engines prior to qualifying and data will be permitted at practice. A single gear will be used, but teams will bring four different gears. NASCAR will determine which gear is needed after practice. Teams will start on a 3.70 gear.

The Indianapolis rule package differs from the first track-specific rule package used this season at Kentucky which created lower downforce. The modifications helped produce a track-record 22 green-flag passes for the lead and a total of 2,665 green-flag passes overall.(NASCAR)

NASCAR will address throwing of water bottles

A NASCAR executive said Monday that officials will address the issue of throwing water bottles out of the car with drivers after a water bottle was spotted on the apron during a debris caution in Sunday's Sprint Cup race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Another water bottle was spotted on the apron during a caution for Paul Menard later in the race. Steve O'Donnell, NASCAR executive vice president and chief racing development officer, told SiriusXM NASCAR Radio's "The Morning Drive" that it's not uncommon for drivers to discard water bottles during a race. "Coming off pit road sometimes you see it down on the apron where some water bottles are discarded," he said. "I think in this case, we candidly weren't really sure and knew it was potentially one of the drivers' ones that are a little bit different with the material they're made out of. If someone is purposely trying to manipulate a caution, that's not something that is going to be tolerated, and we'll have to look into that further as we go and we'll address that with the teams also."(NBCSports)

NSCS Recap: Kyle Busch continues march toward Chase with New Hampshire win

LOUDON, N.H. – The odds in Kyle Busch’s favor made another dramatic surge on Sunday afternoon at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

In winning for the third time in eight starts since returning from an 11-race injury absence, Busch solidified his chances of qualifying for the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup with a serendipitous victory in the 5-Hour ENERGY 301 at the Magic Mile.

Two critical moves were essential to Busch’s winning for the second time at New Hampshire and the 32nd time in his career. First, with the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota sliding in a patch of oil and thinking he had a tire going flat, Busch brought his car to pit road on Lap 244, sooner than planned.

That allowed Busch to gain time on the track while other contending cars stayed out on old tires. The spur of the moment "strategy" ultimately played out in his favor.

Second, Busch got back on the lead lap with a gutsy pass of race leader Kevin Harvick and second-place Brad Keselowski, weaving through traffic on the frontstretch seconds before NASCAR called a caution for fluid on the track on Lap 251 of 301.

Busch inherited the top spot when the rest of the lead-lap cars came to pit road on Lap 253, and he stayed up front the rest of the way. After taking the white flag, Busch won the race under yellow when Alex Bowman’s accident in Turn 2 on the final lap caused the race’s seventh caution.

Given the discussion on team radios about the probability of that Lap 251 caution being called, Busch felt a strong sense of urgency to make what proved to be the decisive pass.

"I knew I’d been running it hard and I’d been trying to catch (Matt) Kenseth in front of me that entire run, and I had just been so tight that I couldn’t get going and couldn’t get a rhythm going to close in on Kenseth. And I figured I just chewed the right front off of it, because I went into the corner and the thing just went straight one time so I was like, ‘Man, I’m down to cords now, that’s it, it’s done.’

"We shot to pit road and got it changed there, and evidently it was oil on the race track that just made the car slip so bad from out from under me. We got a lucky break and I hauled butt, man, those five laps I ran were five qualifying laps through traffic trying to get back up to the front and pass Harvick to stay on the lead lap. That was our saving bucket right there. That was what we needed to do."

The offshoot of the victory is that Busch’s hopes of making the Chase now are better than realistic. To qualify, he must finish the first 26 races in the top 30 in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series standings. With seven races left before the cutoff, Busch is 33rd, trailing 30th-place David Gilliland by 58 points.(Ried Spencer, NASCAR Media)

Final Start for Kenny Wallace at Iowa

The August 1st U.S. Cellular 250 at Iowa Speedway will be Kenny Wallace's third NASCAR Xfinity Series start of 2015. The ever-popular Wallace announced that after what will be a series-record 547 career starts, the Iowa event will also mark the final start of his 26-year NASCAR career. While his NASCAR career may be coming to a close, the man affectionately known to friends and fans as "Herman," doesn't plan to go out without a fight. He heads to Iowa with what is likely one of his best chances ever to capture the checkers. Wallace will be at the helm of the U.S. Cellular Toyota in the event. The #20 team currently sits fourth overall in the Xfinity Series Owner Standings and won the pole position for the season's first race at Iowa Speedway. Wallace noted, "To me, this isn't a sad moment; I'm at a truly happy place in my life right now. After all, not too many guys get to have the privilege of being a NASCAR driver, especially for as long as I have. I really wanted to end my long career on a positive note and I'm very excited about our chances in Iowa. The #20 team is one of the best in the sport and I'm looking forward to having a chance to end my NASCAR career with a great finish. I really want to thank U.S. Cellular for helping me make that happen." When all is said and done after Iowa, the former Xfinity Series Rookie of the Year and three-time Most Popular Driver will leave behind a remarkable legacy of longevity and perseverance that is nearly unparalleled in the sport. This is shown by what will be--following Iowa--an all-time record 547 career Xfinity Series starts and 904 combined NASCAR national series starts (14th all-time). After making his NASCAR debut in Dale Earnhardt's #8 Xfinity Series ride at Martinsville in 1988, Wallace would go on to finish among the top-10 in the Xfinity Series standings in 10 of his 14 full seasons, including a runner-up finish in 1991. His nine series wins and ten poles rank him among the top-40 all-time in both categories, while his 173 top-ten finishes mark the seventh-best all-time career total. Wallace may have most often competed in the Xfinity Series, but he also enjoyed a fruitful career in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series as well, where he had 344 career starts, including three poles. While he may not have reached victory lane in the Cup series, Wallace played a vital role in several of its most memorable finishes, including pushing the late Dale Earnhardt to his final NASCAR victory at Talladega in 2000. In recent years, Wallace has been able to capitalize on his charismatic personality and racing experience in becoming a NASCAR analyst for FOX Sports. In that role, he currently appears on Fox Sports 1's NASCAR RaceDay and NASCAR Victory Lane shows.(Wallace PR)

Superspeedway qualifying format to be used at Indy and Michigan

NASCAR officials told NASCAR Sprint Cup, XFINITY and Camping World Truck Series teams on Wednesday that it plans to use the superspeedway qualifying format at Indianapolis Motor Speedway next weekend and Michigan International Speedway next month. Beginning in May at Talladega Superspeedway, there were two rounds of qualifying with drivers turning one timed lap. The top 12 advanced to the final round. Each driver took a warm-up lap, the timed lap and a cool-down lap before returning to pit road. Last weekend, the format was scheduled to be run by the Sprint Cup Series at Daytona International Speedway, but rain forced the field to be set per the rule book by practice speeds.
Based on a random draw at Indianapolis, vehicles will line up on pit road for the first round -- rather than nose in or nose out in a pit stall -- and NASCAR will release drivers at a predetermined interval. The sanctioning body reserves the right to have more than one vehicle on track at a time. It's likely that two vehicles will be on track at the same time, but the second vehicle won't impede or help the one it follows on track. Following each lap, NASCAR will impound vehicles, and there will be a 10-minute break between rounds. Only during that break may teams make adjustments, and they will only be allowed to adjust tape and use a cool-down unit at that time. The final round qualifying order will be set from slowest to fastest speeds in the first round with starting positions 1-12 determined by the fastest laps in that second session.(NASCAR)

NSCS Recap: Kyle Busch masters new aero package in Sprint Cup win at Kentucky

SPARTA, Ky. – Adapting adroitly to a new competition package for NASCAR Sprint Cup Series cars, Kyle Busch sped to victory in Saturday night’s Quaker State 400 at Kentucky Speedway, taking a giant step toward the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup with his second victory since returning from an 11-race injury absence.

Busch won for the 31st time in his career and the second time at the 1.5-mile track. Race runner-up Joey Logano was the only interloper in a top five that also included all four Joe Gibbs Racing drivers—Busch, Denny Hamlin in third, Carl Edwards in fourth and Matt Kenseth in fifth.

Busch grabbed the lead from Logano after several laps of intense racing, taking the point at the stripe on Lap 248 and clearing Logano’s Ford through Turn 2 on Lap 249 of 267. From that point, Busch pulled away to win by 1.594 seconds.

The new aero package, in Busch’s view was a benefit as he closed on Logano in a race that saw a track-record 22 green-flag passes for the lead.

"All the drivers were kind of striving for this," Busch said. "I felt like it was a positive thing when I was chasing Joey down. Right when I got to him, he moved up and tried to block my lane. With the old package, you’d get stalled out, and get stuck behind the guy. I just moved down and went a little bit lower and got my Camry to stick and was able to power through and get back by him.

"We swapped the lead back and forth a couple times. I thought it was pretty good racing. You don’t want to spend too much time racing around and putting on too good of a show for the fans to take yourself out of a win. I thought that was a really good race, at least it wasn’t a guy who checked out on the last run and you didn’t see a pass for the lead coming down the final stretch."

Long a proponent of lower downforce, Edwards was even more effusive in his praise of the new package.

"This package, we need to keep going in this direction," Edwards said. "We could race closer together—I was steering right. We were using the whole car. We just need to keep taking downforce away. It was an awesome show. Just an awesome, fun day and I’m glad Kyle got the win."

Busch led a race-high 163 laps, scoring a maximum 48 points and moving to 35th in the standings, 87 points behind Cole Whitt in 30th. Busch must finish the first 26 races in the top 30 in order to be eligible for the Chase.(Reid Spencer, NASCAR Media)

NSCS Race Recap: Dale Earnhardt Jr. Wins Coke Zero 400

Dale Earnhardt Jr. endured a weekend of rain, a three-hour-plus pre-race delay, and nine caution flags to win the Coke-Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway early Monday morning.

The race ended at 2:41 a.m. and concluded with a large crash featuring Austin Dillon's No. 3 Chevrolet going airborne and smashing into the catch-fence near Turn 1 after he crossed the start-finish line. Dillon walked away from the wreck, the fourth major crash of the night. After being released from the infield care center, Dillon said he suffered a bruised tailbone and forearm.

Pole-sitter Earnhardt dominated the night, leading 96 laps in his No. 88 Nationwide Stars and Stripes Chevrolet. He also had the convincing support of the fans remaining at the track following the 154-minute rain delay. The delay was a harbinger for the race itself, which included four multi-car crashes and those nine caution flags that covered 43 of the scheduled 160 laps before the green-white checkered finish. It was Earnhardt’s fourth NASCAR Sprint Cup career victory on the 2.5-mile Florida track.

"I had a lot of fun tonight," a somewhat subdued Earnhardt said after the race. "We have such great motors and good cars. We ran Very fast. I had to block a lot, get a lot of pushes from everybody. I had to run real hard to win this race here. We got shuffled back a few times."

Driver Paul Menard could have been speaking for everyone at the speedway when he said on his radio during the race that Earnhardt’s No. 88 was "ridiculously" fast. Earnhardt consistently outran the competition on re-start after re-start.

Earnhardt’s crew raced onto the track after the last-lap crash to check on Dillon’s condition. The catch fences at Daytona International Speedway were reinforced following an accident in 2013 during a NASCAR XFINITY Series race.

Denny Hamlin finished third, with Kevin Harvick and Kurt Busch rounding out the top five. Harvick leads the Sprint Cup points standings by 63 points over Earnhardt.(Bill Speros, NASCAR Media)

Genesee Beer to be on No. 32 at Watkins Glen International

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Genesee Brewing Co. announced that it will be the primary sponsor for Go Green Racing's No. 32 Ford Fusion driven by racing legend Boris Said at Watkins Glen this August.

Genesee will sponsor the team for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Watkin's Glen on Sunday, August 9, 2015. Watkin's Glen International is one of only two road racing tracks in the country.

According to Matt Goldman, channel marketing manager for Genesee, the beer company is thrilled to be a primary sponsor at The Glen for the fourth consecutive year. "We're excited to bring Genesee back to the Glen with a racing legend like Boris Said. Genesee has enjoyed incredible popularity among NASCAR fans, so we welcome the chance to connect with them once again this summer. "

The No. 32 Ford Fusion's paint scheme reflects Genesee's new heritage-inspired packaging that recently rolled out across its family of products. The 137-year-old brewing company is New York State's oldest brewery. Its long history of quality beer holds a special place in the hearts of its passionate fans.

"Genesee fans bring such enthusiasm and fun to race weekend," said Boris. "We hope local fans will come out to cheer us on and watch us race. The new Genesee packaging inspired this year's paint and it's never looked better!"

Team owner Archie St. Hilaire said, "Go Green Racing really enjoys working with local partners on these Sprint Cup Races, and we are excited to do the same with Genesee this August at Watkins Glen."(Go Green Racing/Genesee Brewing)

Jimmie Johnson Foundation Golf Tournament raises an event record $900,000

The Jimmie Johnson Foundation announced that its annual Jimmie Johnson Foundation Golf Tournament and Dinner raised $900,000, an event record. "This is such a great event," said Johnson. "Chani and I are so thankful to everyone that supports us and to sponsors like Lowe's, that believe in supporting the vision of the Foundation. We are excited that the Foundation can continue funding projects that address critical needs in K-12 public schools." Johnson hosted more than 125 golfers at Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla, California for Wednesday's golf tournament. The night before the tournament, the Johnsons hosted approximately 200 guests at a special dinner and auction, with live music from Darius Rucker at The Lodge at Torrey Pines. The tournament, which in nine years has raised more than $5.6 million, benefits the Champions Grants program, a partnership between the Jimmie Johnson Foundation and Lowe's Toolbox for Education. The grants range from $25,000-$100,000 and are distributed to K-12 public schools in Chandra and Jimmie Johnson's hometowns in California and Oklahoma, and where they currently reside in North Carolina.(JJF)

What Kyle Busch needs to do to make Chase

Heading into Sunday's Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway, Kyle Busch is 39th in points, 173 points behind 30th-place Justin Allgaier. If Allgaier keeps accumulating points at his current rate, he'll have roughly 435 points when the regular-season ends. That, in turn, means that to catch Allgaier, Busch will have to average a 12th-place finish in the next 11 races. Considering that in the four races Busch has run since returning from a compound fracture of the lower right leg and a midfoot fracture of the left foot, his average finish is 24.75, it's safe to say Busch has his work cut out for him. Plus Busch has to win a race.(FoxSports)

FanVision Introduces FanVision Puck

FanVision, the in-venue technology and content platform used at professional sporting events across the country, today announced the introduction of the groundbreaking mobile accessory FanVision Puck. FanVision Puck connects to any iOS or Android device to provide access to the streaming video, audio, and data content currently available on the FanVision Controller dedicated device. FanVision Puck will debut at the 2016 DAYTONA 500 via the DAYTONA International Speedway mobile app and will be available at all other International Speedway Corporation (ISC) races throughout the 2016 NASCAR® Sprint Cup season. Trial runs for the device will be available at select ISC tracks during the remainder of the 2015 schedule.

FanVision Puck solves the two most serious mobile challenges for events and venues: mobile phone charging and connectivity. FanVision Puck provides users with live video, audio, real-time statistics and replays over a private and wireless broadcast network, offering uninterrupted streaming data for every fan in attendance. Further, FanVision Puck provides a 2,000 mAh charge to the user’s phone with its own internal battery. Over a four-hour period, users will be able to continuously consume live video and audio, while seeing their smartphones’ battery charge.

“FanVision Puck will continue our company’s mission to enhance the fan experience through technology,” said FanVision CEO Andrew Daines. “Fans will enjoy the ability to charge their phone and consume content without worrying about battery life and data.”

“We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to debut the FanVision Puck at the DAYTONA 500,” Daytona International Speedway President Joie Chitwood III said. “The 2016 DAYTONA 500 will be the first in the newly renovated motorsports stadium and this extraordinary technology from the FanVision Puck will further elevate the fan’s experience at the ‘World Center of Racing.’ ”(FanVison)
